YOUNG, FEMALE, AND RUNNING A BUSINESS
This Refinery29 piece features female business owners under 30 sharing the biggest challenges they’ve faced, and how they overcame them. As someone who’s just launched her own start-up, it’s always illuminating to read words of wisdom from those who’ve got a bit more experience.
Isabel Allende's The House of The Spirits is one of my all-time favourite novels (and if you haven't read it, you should definitely get yourself a copy this very instant), so I love this article about her writing process - why she writes, how she writes, and for whom. For someone whose novels are so deeply rooted in the literary tradition of magical realism, Allende has a refreshingly pragmatic approach to her writing process: "show up, show up, show up, and after a while, the muse shows up, too".
On Tuesday, the lovely people at It’s Nice That invited me to give a talk at their monthly Nicer Tuesdays event, and to tell the story of Women Who. It was a brilliant evening (photos and video to follow soon!), and the next day It’s Nice That co-founder Alex Bec sent me an article he wrote a few months ago, on the subject of focus. Illustrated with examples from It’s Nice That’s own journey, it’s full of lessons that can be applied to countless areas of your career - and reading it immediately helped me clarify what on my ever-growing to-do list really matters.
