ASHLEY WEATHERFORD ON KANYE
To say this has been a controversial week for Kanye West would be... something of an understatement. From his “multiracial women only” Yeezy Season 4 casting call criteria, to the actual show itself - which saw models fainting in the heat, and was slated by fashion editors across the board - he hasn't exactly covered himself in glory. This article by The Cut’s Beauty Editor Ashley Weatherford is the best articulation I’ve read so far of the problematic implications the wording of West's Yeezy casting call has for dark-skinned black women.
THE WOMAN YOU WANT TO BE IS RICH
This piece by The Financial Diet founder Chelsea Fagan demystifying the aspirational lifestyles that social media has duped us into believing are an attainable norm is excellent. Social media envy is a trap I’m as guilty of falling into of the next person, and this article reminded me why we really shouldn’t.
OPEN ACCOUNT WITH SUCHIN PAK
This is my new favourite podcast of the moment, and it's all about people’s attitudes to and relationships with money. Hosted by former MTV presenter SuChin Pak, Episode 5 featuring guests Lena Waithe and Ravi Patel (who you might know from Aziz Ansari’s excellent Masters of None) is a particular highlight. It’s laugh out loud funny, but still manages to impart plenty of meaningful advice about making, losing, and living with money.
Since a friend sent this to me a few days ago, I’ve watched this brilliant short by filmmaker Kathryn Ferguson several times already. Exploring the successes and achievements of four super-successful creative women – Bella Freud, Caryn Franklin, Sharmadean Reid, and the late Zaha Hadid – Four Tell is beautifully art directed, and full of the most incredible pearls of wisdom. If you missed it the first time round like I did (it was actually made to celebrate International Women’s Day in 2013), don’t make the same mistake twice.
